First Line Friday – Cursed Bones

FLF-BlackIsobel isn’t so good with the social interactions. As you’ll soon see…

The welcome sound of flint striking nearly brought him to his knees. She knelt in front of a huge fireplace, her hands busy coaxing a flame from the spark she’d struck. As he got closer, he saw something he’d missed in their earlier interaction: her wrists had the same dark lines inked over them. They swirled along the back of her neck, as well, eddying up to disappear in the wealth of tangled hair piled messily on her head.

He couldn’t fathom why someone would decorate themselves in such a manner, but nearly everything he’d seen since entering this odd house had left him scratching his head.

She made quick work of the fire and soon it blazed merrily in its stone home. When she turned to him, she kept her face averted, one marked hand waving vaguely at the neatly stacked wood beside the fireplace.

“You’ll have enough until morning. Don’t let it go out or you’ll get cold.” She didn’t wait for his response, but turned on her heel and disappeared deeper into the room. “And stay out of my tower.”
